Professional Development Opportunities

August 2022

Our writing programs at Neuro Community Care continue to thrive this summer! Through our Virtual Independence Programs (VIP), we offer warrior and caregiver writing circles each month. These writing circles are facilitated by Anne Alper, our Expressive Arts Therapist. The groups typically have 4-8 participants each session and provide an opportunity for each person to write creatively in response to a prompt and share with one another. If you work with a warrior or caregiver who may be interested in joining our writing programs, please make a referral to his/her case manager!

Resource Recommendation:

She’s the Veteran

She’s the Veteran works with female veterans to provide a supportive community, strengthen them through programming, and spearhead research and development efforts in support of their health and mental health. They focus on:

  •  Continuing to build a foundation for research on the status of mental health in the female veteran. Identify gaps in female veteran healthcare including mental health issues which are under diagnosed and under researched.
  • To create programs that both enrich and improve the mental health of female veterans and improve their lives.
  • Be the organization that speaks on behalf of women veterans everywhere that are often regarded as invisible.

Further details can be found on the She’s The Veteran website.

Creative Arts Corner:

Untitled by Doneane W.

Sunlight peaking over the horizon, but is the day beginning or ending. Such an odd time and space, water is calming, waves are settling, sand is a bright orange swaying the mind, to serenity of evening glare. In the distance shadows fading almost unseen. Is it a whale, birds, or the days memory flashing by. The calm helping me meditate to begin or end my day!

Artist bio: My name is Doneane, retired CW2, Army Property Book Officer. I served 13 years, 8 months and 17 days active. After my injury overseas 16 years ago, I picked up a pen to let my emotions out and have been writing ever since.

Creative Arts Therapist: Several of our warriors have been participating in creative arts sessions online once a week with writing instructor Anne Alper. Sessions focus on guided writing exercises with theme prompts to develop writing skills and structured writing practice.

Ms. Alper has a Masters in Education and Counseling, is certified through the Amherst Writers and Artist Foundation, and completed a 2 year program in California for expressive arts.
